Your Wedding Is a Reflection of You

Every couple tells a different story. Your wedding is not just a party. It is the merging of two families, two histories, and often two distinct cultures. The music you choose is the soundtrack to that merger. It is the thread that ties your college friends to your grandparents and your childhood memories to your future.

At The Uptown Groove, we believe that a cookie-cutter playlist is the enemy of a great wedding. We are not just a Top 40 band that plays the same fifty songs every Saturday night. We have an extensive repertoire from which to draw on and specialize in curating personalized set lists for your wedding to make sure you and your guests have the time of your lives. Our mission is to deliver "Perfection in Live Entertainment," and perfection looks different for everyone. For some, perfection is a night of Motown classics. For others, it is a high-energy Hora that gets every aunt and uncle out of their chairs.

We specialize in accommodating special requests, unique traditions, and cultural music. We understand that these moments are often the most important parts of the evening for your family. We take the time to prepare, practice, and execute them with the same level of polish and energy as our standard repertoire.

The "Yes" Mentality: We Love a Challenge

Many bands shy away from special requests. They have a set list. They stick to it. They do not want to step outside their comfort zone. The Uptown Groove operates with a "Yes, we can" mentality. We view your special requests not as a burden but as an opportunity to make your wedding truly unique. And unlike many bands that have been playing for years and begin to “phone it in,” we rehearse regularly to stay sharp, add new songs the world is falling in love with, and often, learn repertoire unique to specific clients’ weddings.

During our planning process, led by our band leader Seth Sealfon, we ask detailed questions about your family's traditions. Are there specific songs that must be played? Are there traditional dances that need to happen at a specific time? We want to know the significance behind these requests so we can give them the respect they deserve.

Our clients consistently praise this flexibility. In a recent review on Zola, a client named Sarah K & B (December 29th, 2024) noted, "Their repertoire of different genres across different eras was also very impressive, and they absolutely NAILED every song!!!!!" This range is what sets us apart. We can transition from a traditional cultural anthem to a modern pop hit without missing a beat. We keep the energy high regardless of the genre.

Cultural Traditions: The Hora, The Tarantella, and Beyond

We have performed at hundreds of weddings across Upstate New York. We have seen it all. We know that certain songs are the "bat signal" for families. When those first notes hit, the dance floor floods.

The Hora (Jewish Tradition)

The Hora is one of the most high-energy moments in any Jewish wedding. It requires a band that understands the pacing. You cannot just play "Hava Nagila" at a moderate tempo. You have to build the speed. You have to feed off the energy of the crowd as the couple is lifted in chairs. We have mastered this build. We know how to loop the sections to keep the dance going as long as the crowd wants. We ensure the energy peaks at exactly the right moment.

The Tarantella (Italian Tradition)

For our Italian clients, the Tarantella is a non-negotiable. It is a test of endurance and joy. Our rhythm section locks into that fast 6/8 groove that compels everyone to grab hands and spin. We treat these traditional songs with the same attention to detail and musical integrity as Earth, Wind, & Fire anthems and play them authentically and with passion.

The Irish Jig and More

Whether it is an Irish jig, a Polka for a Buffalo crowd, or a specific Latin groove, we have the musicianship to pull it off. Our members are hand-picked professionals with diverse backgrounds and decades of collective experience. This depth of talent allows us to adapt to various styles comfortably and our regular rehearsal schedule ensures that we are prepared and nail the performance.

The Hybrid Advantage: Band Plus DJ

Sometimes a couple requests a specific song that is simply not suited for a live band instrumentation. Perhaps it is a Bollywood track with specific electronic production. Maybe it is a K-Pop hit or a traditional Greek folk song recorded by a specific artist.

This is where The Uptown Groove’s hybrid model becomes your greatest asset. We are not just a band. We are a full-service entertainment company that includes a professional DJ.

Seamless Integration

If you have a cultural song that needs to be the original recording, our DJ mixes it seamlessly into the set. We can have the band play a high-energy set, transition instantly to the DJ for a set of specific cultural dance music, and then bring the band back for the finale.

This ensures you get the best of both worlds. You get the electric energy of a live 9-piece band for the majority of the night. You also get the authentic, original recordings for your specific cultural needs. There is no compromise. You get exactly what you want.

Learning Your Special Songs

The First Dance. The Father-Daughter Dance. The Mother-Son Dance. These are the emotional pillars of the reception. While we have a vast library of songs, we understand that you might have a specific track that means the world to you.

We are happy to learn new songs for these key moments. We do not just learn the basic outline of the song, we study the arrangement and work on phrasing and the nuances that make each song “tick”. We want our live version to feel just as special as the record you fell in love with.

A recent bride named Katelyn shared her experience in a review She wrote that the band "learned multiple songs for us, including Unforgettable, our first dance song." She noted that the guests couldn't stop talking about the music. That is our goal. We want your special song to be a highlight, not just a requirement.

The Planning Process: The “Final Walk Through”

The secret to executing special requests is preparation. We do not leave anything to chance. Approximately one week before your wedding, we hold a “Final Walk Through” meeting. During this meeting, Seth Sealfon will review every scheduled minute and every special request with you.

  • We confirm the correct version of the song.

  • We confirm the pronunciation of names for introductions.

  • We confirm the timing. When exactly should your song start? Is it right after the Grand Entrance? After dinner?

  • We review your "Do Not Play" list to ensure we avoid any cultural faux pas.

This meeting is where the "Super Organized" reputation of The Uptown Groove shines. We take the anxiety out of the process. You walk away from that meeting knowing that we understand your vision perfectly. You know that we have the notes, the scripts, and the plan to execute it flawlessly.

Case Studies: Clients Who Loved the Customization

Our reviews are filled with couples who were thrilled by our ability to accommodate their unique needs.

James S: "The best wedding band ever!"

James, who hired us for a wedding in Buffalo, mentioned that we really took into consideration his "must play" and "prefer not to play" songs. He noted that we respected his vision while still using our expertise to keep the party moving. This balance is key. We listen to you, but we also use our experience to ensure your requests work on the dance floor.

Carly: "Phenomenal Wedding Band"

Carly, a June 2025 bride, shared that the band truly nailed all of our special requests and curated the perfect set list for her reception. She appreciated how collaborative and attentive the planning process felt, noting that every song choice flowed seamlessly with the night’s energy. Despite a highly customized playlist, the dance floor stayed packed from start to finish, proving that personalization only elevated the experience. For Carly, the band didn’t just play music; they created an atmosphere where guests felt connected, excited, and ready to dance all night long.

Hannah: "Dream Wedding"

Hannah shared that her husband, family, and friends had the most incredible night at their wedding, with the dance floor packed from the moment the band started playing. The nonstop energy and unforgettable atmosphere doesn't happen by accident, it's the result of our commitment to giving every couple a truly memorable experience. We go above and beyond to bring the energy your celebration deserves, creating moments that guests can’t stop talking about long after the night ends. Our goal is simple: to deliver a performance so fun and engaging that no one ever wants to leave the dance floor.
